Equinet and the Lithuanian Equal Opportunities Ombudsman express concerns with regards to the homophobic law in Lithuania

10 August 2009

Equinet and the Lithuanian Equal Opportunities Ombudsman urge the European and Lithuanian authorities to take necessary steps to ensure the protection of the basic rights of LGBT people in Lithuania.

On 14th July 2009 the Lithuanian Parliament adopted the 'law on the Protection of Minors against Detrimental Effect of Public Information'. This legislation, which results in the banning of any information on homosexuality if it can be accessed by minors, will come into force in March 2010 in Lithuania. Equinet and the Lithuanian Equal Opportunities Ombudsman consider this recently adopted law homophobic and representing a threat for basic human rights and freedoms.

In a letter addressed to the Presidents of the European Parliament, European Commission and Republic of Lithuania, both organisations expressed jointly their concerns and highlighted the possible detrimental effects of the law on LGBT people in Lithuania.
Equinet and the Lithuanian Equal Opportunities Ombudsman are calling for action from these institutions to ensure the protection of the basic rights of Lithuanian LBGT citizens.
